Most of us are so busy setting goals and making plans that we forget that the Universe may have another, and better, plan for us. I can remember having a wise spiritual teacher who used to say that the key to living a creative, full life was to “delete the need to know”. When I first heard this I was horrified. What did he mean? No goal setting? No specific plans? OMG! My inner control freak went mad…then I began to understand what he really meant.
Looking at life as a challenge.
We have all gone through challenges in our lives; things that no matter how hard we tried could not be avoided. There is also a level of excitement in creatively coming up with new solutions to meet these challenges.
Finding solutions is very different than simply “Looking at life’s problems”.
Notice how heavy that phrase feels. Being solution-oriented is invigorating and actually opens the brain to serotonin and oxytocin (happy chemicals), while being problem-oriented gives the brain a signal to pump out testosterone and stress chemicals.
Which would you rather choose?
Here are some tips to help you delete the need to control
1. Allow the Universe to bless you
It is not just about doing. It is about being and allowing. The master Sai Baba once said, “being is lost in becoming”. Learn to be present with what is and let the Universe surprise you. One of my clients left my prosperity ritual where she had set an intention for a certain amount of money. She went to the park to reflect on what she had learned. Under the bench she noticed a bag and picked it up. It was filled with hundred dollar bills. This was the universe fulfilling her wish, without her having to do anything but receive.
2. Step into the unknown
Start to live as if you were a tourist in your own town. Release cynicism and open to the joy and fun that comes from becoming spontaneous. There are times when progress only comes from a spontaneous leap into the future.
3. Set Goals but be willing to receive something better
Anytime I set a goal I always say, “this or something better”. As I take action towards my goals I am focused on being present with what is, and open to signs from the Universe that may tell me to adjust my course. In this way, I can have a healthy relationship with uncertainty.
